Alex gets a break at Arrowhead?

ACCORDING TO:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2608078

Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen was charged with driving under the influence on Friday stemming from a traffic stop on Tuesday morning, according to a report on the Kansas City Star Web site.

Police in Leawood, Kan., pulled over Allen at around 1:30 a.m. for driving erratically. Leawood Police Capt. Dale Finger said Allen refused to take a field sobriety test or a breathalyzer. The officer arrested him for DUI, and in Kansas refusing to take the tests results in an automatic suspension of one's driver's license.

The officer drove Allen home. He has been ordered to appear in court on Oct. 25.

Tears your heart out right?
It does mine, and the Chiefs.
This is his 2nd DUII offense in 5 months.

A few pages down this blogsite:

I alluded the Bengals legal issues, search later please.
I thanked God for a team here in Kansas City that had a Moral Structure that reflected the fine midwest values that abound in the region. I apologize. I had no idea. This man just finished a diversion program from the last offense. He learned the dangers, legal, medical, emotional and spiritual of "problem drinkers". Maybe he will get some time to serve for this recent offense. The team will suffer even more for his lack of judgement and his inability to internalize the information, offered for his education after his last offense. God be with him. Pray for him please.

Chiefs D- find a way to roll on Sunday Afternoon, please!

Will Frank Gore be the same?

"Players tend to take on the mentality of their head coach," cornerback Patrick Surtain was quoted as saying this week. He acknowledges that Coach Herm Edwards was a former cornerback when he mentions that, "I'm not saying our offense still isn't a great offense. But we're still just getting back to playing defense."

The Chiefs do surely need to grow quickly defensively, remember the San Francisco 49ers are in Arrowhead for a visit Sunday. San Francisco statistically is up at the top of the charts. They are today fourth in the league offensively. They come in averaging 381 yds/game.

On the road they have been only slightly less succesful. Frank Gore was held down, he rushed for 87yds in Arizona. He did manage 2 touchdowns though. Alex Smith had a good game completing 23 of 40 passes for 288 yds. He was sacked one time, and threw one TD pass. His QB rating then wound up 88.3

Arizona today is averaging giving up 260 yds/per game against the pass, so Alex did well in week One. He did manage to get sacked three times last week when he played at Candlestick up against Philly last week. There, Alex Smith did fumble once too- maybe his game has fallen off. Our own Kansas City Chiefs, on the other hand are only giving up 146.5 against the pass, so that will be where the battle happens.

Last week against Philadelphia Frank Gore plummeted. He rushed for only 57yds at home. He is listed as questionable w/ rib injury, it has been reported that he became disgruntled, reclusive, after he made a momentum stopping fumble last week. On the goal line, for a defensive 99yd return for touchdown!! He accounted for the NFL Defensive play of the week!!!

He will come back and play though, this week. Can he blow it two weeks in a row?
Have the suicide squad standing by!

All in all we are in for a very good time Sunday afternoon. Pressure D will be the play of the game. Defensive turnovers are expected, defensive touchdowns will be appreciated.
Huard will be in the wheelhouse, probably behind a two tightend offensive line. He should be fine. Then ...there is Larry Johnson. You still want to be the man Larry, well you got it, you are.
Pack it and make first downs- all day long please!

Turley is down? ....Problems.

Who's this guy? Read on!

Omigod. Turley hurt his back. Again! Wonder if he hurt it playing Denver or if it happened during his week off. If anyone hears please leave me a comment.

This is going to make the San Francisco game bigger, and more difficult. We have to start up the old OT merry-go-round again. Not Good. Will Svitek, you getting comfortable with this offense yet? We may have to depend on the defense to score a coupla' points this week. Heck, they can get it done. They probably will. I have faith.

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/football/nfl/kansas_city_chiefs/15625073.htm?source=rss&channel=kansascity_kansas_city_chiefs reports that:

On Turley, Coach Herm Edwards remains positive:

“He’s gone through a lot,” Edwards said. “He hasn’t missed a lot of days since he got here. He went through all of training camp for the most part. You can anticipate there’s going to be some stiffness at times with a guy like that after all he’s gone through.”

The official word is that Turley remains probable for Sunday's game. With all the whoopla gonna go down, the big expectations, the probable appearance of Trent Green on the sidelines will have the crowd pumped. Defense needs to keep it up ...for sure.

Jordan Black, who is best remembered as struggling as the left tackle last year will be the likely replacement. He just played recently at the right tackle spot against Cincinnati, he had problems with his assignments. Learning one side of the blocking schemes is tough, now having to learn both creates unreasonable expectations in this bloggers opinion.

You got to wonder who is out there for help with this offensive line. Uncalled free agents, or whomever! Veteran St Louis Ram OG Blaine Saipaia was just signed by the Detroit Lions this morning. They had to give up on a reciever with a million dollar guaranteed contract to clear space for him. They took Saipaia. You have to wonder just what are the possibilities. We need to look at Europe or our fine neighbors to the North! Something.

We wait. Svitek, many are sure will be a "competent" offensive tackle.

Coach Edwards remarks again:

“He’s got a lot of talent,” Edwards said. “He doesn’t have the experience of playing there as much as Jordan because he hasn’t lined up there enough. He was a defensive lineman when he got here. Experience is what he’s lacking.

“It’s kind of unfair to him because we’ve had him on the left and on the right, and that’s (difficult). He’s had to learn both of those positions. That’s his job, to be prepared to play either side.”

Coach, I can only say... I hope your hands arent being tied by management as regards the ability to recruit and sign players this time of the year. We have holes. I hope you have dropped a request in the sugggestion box. I'm sure you have. Please share your results, all us fans need to know.

Until then, short drop back passes will be the call of the day Sunday. I can only hope Larry Johnson still has an edge, after Denver. I pray that he is even still keeping it finely honed. Don't you imagine he may have to break an out of an extra tackle or two?

Meanwhile, we all, still keep prayin'!

Our Chiefs Can use a little Godly Intervention!

"Whether you call it luck or momentum or the blessings of God, a lot's gone our way," said the New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Jonathan Stinchcomb, "We just got to keep going in that direction and hope the cards keep turning up in our favor."

Many are calling the New Orleans Saint's truly blessed this year. Karma, or whatever, is said to be at work. 'Good Juju' is another phrase being uttered in those obscure Voodoo shops, in those small out of the way places in New Orleans. I have no opinion really, I am just taking this time to feel happy for that team. The Saints.

"We were good and we were something special," said Saint Steve Gleason, whose blocked punt led to the first touchdown against the Falcons. ...Yes, boys, you were.

Does the Lord take time to intervene in an NFL football game? Would He use an opportunity in front of a crowd of 80,000 or so strong, with a nationwide audience on ESPNTV, to send a message ...a message of hope and pride, after that area faced such devastation and despair? You bet He would!
However, it is essentially the Saints football team who are being used to send the statement here. You could hear it all over, in the voices on that team. The Saints wide receiver Joe Horn said it too, "Oh yeah. A lot of people's jaws were on the bottom of their chest in the third quarter ...It's cool, We knew what we got in this locker room and we had to believe in ourselves."

May these our Kansas City Chiefs take a small opportunity on Sunday afternoon, in front of a voracious hometown sea of red, to reflect on the work ethic, reflect on the pride, and consider the faith of those embattled New Orleans Saints. No, our team does not have to depend on a Godly intervention, they needn't go down south and buy up Voodoo dolls to improve their juju. This team needs just to take full advantage of the talent that makes up this 2006 Chiefs football squad.

This team too, has some fine tools. The league has provided the schedule, CBS will help provide a regional audience, the crowd in attendance will surely add to the fire. The Chiefs need to just- let it happen, they need to search inside themselves, search for that faith inside each of them, to overcome the day, and its' obstacles.
They can, they will.
Find a way to win.

Again from New Orleans, Coach Sean Payton said it well-
"It doesn't take long to figure out how important this team is to this community," Payton said. "From a coaching standpoint, player standpoint, organizational standpoint, (we) understand that, appreciate that. The best thing we can do in return is to play good football and win."

In Kansas City Coach Herm Edwards knows that too, he preaches it weekly, very well. So lets remember that on Sunday and
..."Just win Baby!"

Can We get These Guys to come out to Arrowhead Sunday!!!!

They are already together, maybe in the same hotel. They are already close! Somebody in charge give them a call...

...and throw in a couple of American Royal tickets. Free Barbeque??

These guys helped fire up a crowd in the Superdome, they can build an atmosphere!

If the cost is prohibitive, I saw a fine rythmn and blues band named "Connie and the Redheads" at Ol' Shawnee Town Days last weekend. This group has fun, can cover more than a few and they write some good things themselves. They would love the exposure!

Anyway. I hope you were able to see the New Orleans Saints Defensive work on Monday Night Football... doing their thing to bring back. Amazing! That was football! They made Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons run/pass for a total of 200 yards. The only thing was they managed only 60yds more between their running backs! Hey, did I share with you guys I usta be a Saints fan? Really, LOL. I really did, living in Seaside Oregon, before there even was a Seahawk in Seattle. This was back when I was like 15yrs old. Archie Manning days!!
But, I digress... sorry.

I honestly like Offensive Schema of the Saints backcourt duo. Duece McAllister, the polished veteran with 19 rushes and 81 yds. Very cool. Then the second bullet flies outta the chamber, named Reggie Bush, he squeaks out a meager 53yds more for his team, on only 13 attempts! Between these two machines they averaged over four yards with every time they ran the ball. You all know that is ball control.
The reverses, then the fake reverses that were just as effective, all worked. Did you all see how Bush pulled 3-4 defenders with him on one fake reverse!!! That don't leave a whole lotta guys left to put a tackle that ball. That is just good offensive football.

We should consider more of this. Maybe, Larry Johnsons' legs would last him, and us, alot longer. Maybe this season may seem a whole lot shorter for Larry if we were able to successfully incorporate more consistantly, those Michael Bennett options. I am sure then, that Larry would be alot fresher when the playoffs came around. This we need.

Hey, ...Mike Solari... you thinkin', like I'm thinkin'??

Can't we rejoice in what we have? 'Underated- in their own Home Town!'

We are number 3 in the entire NFL in pass defense in Kansas City. Whats with all the "dissing" of our KC pass defense, locally? There have been a total of only 29 passes thrown for completions against our "porous defense" I keep reading about.

Oh yeah, in case math is not your strong suit, thats under 15 passes per game. ? Hear this, we give up less than 150 yds per game! I am joyful!!!

Now, there are 29- (twenty-nine!) other teams in the NFL which define the word "porous" more generously, compared to the Kansaas City Chiefs. I recommend that all you writers here in town, start using the word "stingy" when describing our pass defense. Heckfire! Undefeated Cincinati averages 205! Denver 215!

Additionally, Chicago, vaunted for a great NFL defense- has 184 ypg passed against them. Seattle undefeated as well, gets 222ypg thrown at them, to go with with a mediocre schedule thusfar. The -Indianapolis Colts, offensively one of the most dangerous passing teams have been "porous" enough to allow 181ypg when teams take it to the air against them. Feel any rejoicing coming on, football fans?

Heres a link I suggest you use: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/statistics?sort=ypg&stat=teampass&pos=def&league=nfl&season=2&year=2006

Okay, I know, San Diego and Oakland are the two teams that have better numbers, that lead the league. We three have one less game, granted. But we are talking Yards Passing Against us -Per game! Number three is still very very respectable! What we still need to work on, what we still need to improve is our takeaways and our sacks. Please know it gang. They will only improve with time. They will come when the players learn more about each other, on the field together. I predict we will improve on both numbers this week.

This week the San Diego pass defense is at work at Baltimore and the Ravens will roast those SD numbers at home. Oakland faces Cleveland later on in the day, on the west coast. The Cleveland Browns have thrown the ball for 183+ypg over the first two weeks. Yes, there will be some torquing of these numbers. Of course, the numbers get adjusted every week, with every opponent. Please. Please. Can't we at least rejoice in what we do have, at least today???

Unless we get lit up by Alex Smith at Arrowhead, (he averages 252 per game) the 150 we have averaged should make for a Grand Ol' Tussle.

IF we can hold the 49ers passing numbers down we can remain in the top five in the entire NFL. At least then maybe we can get respect from the national media, if NOT in our own hometown, in Kansas City!

Roll on Red Warriors!

What do some experts say the Chiefs face next weekend?

Is Alex Smith, the San Francisco 49er Quarterback for real? He drew these comments from the Fox Football site, since he is now rated in the top 10 among NFL quarterbacks after week 2.

Commenting are Howie Long, Terry Bradshaw, former Coach Jimmy Johnson, and Curt Menefee, the teams latest addition. All are fairly impressed.

The Following are Exerpts
From the Fox NFL Roundtable
@ http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/5989916
__________________________________________________________________________________
CZAR: Alex Smith looks like a totally different quarterback. Can the 49ers be pretty good this season?

Jimmy: Norv Turner really has made a difference with Alex Smith. Smith hasn't turned the ball over in two weeks. And Frank Gore is a really good running back. Everyone talks about how much Norv helped the development of Troy Aikman, but Emmitt Smith benefited as well.

Howie: I know what you're saying. I've heard Troy talk about Norv and they have something very special. Everyone talked about it in Seattle with Matt Hasselbeck, but Trent Dilfer is another player who is helping Smith. He was a tremendous teammate for Hasselbeck and he's doing the same for Smith. Antonio Bryant has a little T.O. in him, but Dilfer is the one who reined him in and pulled him aside, telling him not to show up his quarterback. He's an invaluable guy for a young quarterback like Smith and for a team trying to turn things around. You almost have to take three steps back to take one step forward. Mike Nolan is changing a mentality of an entire football team. He's trying to instill his vision of what he wants. He's very rigid in what he wants and he's not going to deviate from that.

Curt: They had some bad character guys under the two previous head coaches. Some players complained that they got away with too much. The first thing Mike thought he had to do was to clean out the locker room.

Howie: However, there were times when they released a guy that you wondered how they could afford to get rid of a good player when they weren't a winning team.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Myself, this Kansagonian never held up San Francisco as any stronghold of professional football. I wasnt respectful of the west coast offense- but I do credit Joe Montana and his teams for bringing todays game to the forefront in the NFL. Joe Walsh could stretch an field with that offense for sure. At the time I thought it was sophomoric and and belonged in the NCAA.
I have grown. The Seattle Seahawks, (our hometown team in Portland Ore.) and thier rendition of the popular scheme helped to turn this bloggers opinion. I now have to wonder about these new 49ers, Is this guy Frank Gore the next back to benefit from the west coast offense, the next, Shaun Alexander? I dunno about that!~ time will tell.

The 49ers however, deserve credit for making a great attempt at turning this team around... time will surely tell.

We'll be watching next week!!!
Lets see who shows up next Sunday!!!
Roll on Kansas City Chiefs "D"!!!
Roll on Red Warriors!!!

All I got to say is:
Ya know, if you weed out the sarcasm, and all the full of "himselfness"...the JW is just a good man. he loves his team, he loves his town.

Face it, he always wanted to be a General Manager, maybe... he was one in a past life somewhere, he wont need to be when gets to heaven.

Until then, Peace Jason, I always respect your bottom line, I never fail to see your heart, Yes I too, feel your pain, ...seriously! He hurts for this team.

I know, Its hard to hear through all the yelling!

Take this time to heal bro', we look forward to more of you, to all of you, in your next endeavor!

Whos the real Man In the House! (after)...the Chiefs Press Conference

Look I am Very Impressed with Tamba Hali. He is getting alot of respect from those he faces every week. He will get more. This is just a note to correct the record. According to ESPN and FOX sports, Check the links provided below.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/teamStats?categoryId=67049

http://sports-att.espn.go.com/nfl/teams/stats?team=kan

Then enjoy the excerpt from the news conference (link provided):
http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2006/09/21/qa_with_herm_edwards__921/

Q: DE Tamba Hali saw a lot of double teams last week, does that surprise you at all that he’s getting that kind of respect?

EDWARDS: “No, they were watching film in the preseason. I’d double team him too. He had a pretty good day, he didn’t get the sacks, but he brought a lot of pressure and he’s very well in the run game. That’s what they’ve got to do; they’ve got to play the run first. They gashed us a couple of times and they broke a couple of runs, but for the most part we got after them pretty good and we’ve got to continue to do that. He got some notice.”

Q: He’s your leading tackler right now, are you surprised that a rookie is leading the team in tackles?

EDWARDS: “When you watched him in college that was the type of player that he was. He’s relentless, he’s a guy that chased people and could motor. What you saw on tape, people will say he doesn’t run a good 40-yard dash time, but he plays fast and you see a guy who knows how to get to the football. He is a guy who has made a lot of plays in two games already as a defensive lineman. He leads our team in tackles and he’s all over the place. That’s how he was in college and that’s why we drafted him. We said that this guy is a football player. I kept watching tape and in the fourth quarter the guy was playing the same way that he was in the first quarter. A guy like this, he’s a good football player and now all of a sudden he’s transferred that into our league. He’s done that in our league and that’s a compliment to him because he’s done a good job.”

Now.

You can see, (from the provided links) it is Jared Allen who is the man with the most tackles/assists on the Kansas City defensive roster. Not to take anything away at all from Tamba- we can all enjoy the friendly competition, all year long!

At Last, a Respectable "D"

Time to talk up this defense a little. Kansas City is ranked number #5 in the AFC in overall defense. Yes! This a new day for these "Red Warriors"! They are ranked #9 in the "entire NFL" in overall defense. I wonder, do you remember, where we were last year at this time? I dont know ...but we finished at number 25.

Although there are 4 AFC teams above us right now, Baltimore who is in the number one spot, plays Cleveland in the Dog Pound this weekend. I have some faith that Cleveland's running game will work to trash the unrealistic 65yds/game rushing that the Ravens have managed thus far and bring the top defense a little closer to the pack.

I'll go to church and pray that Rueben Droughns, the Browns running back has a breakout game, after all he is an Oregon Duck! (a school not real popular around these parts these days!) LOL! I have faith he can break his 29.5 yds per game average at home in front of those friendly fans, if he can't the Ravens run defense will look unstoppable- by the numbers!

Our own #5 Defense needs to hold the Frisco Kids down when they come to town. RB Frank Gore comes in with Alex Smith and Forty Niner WR Antonio Bryant #81, who has been a phenom, averaging 30yds/catch, but you know that number will come down. They play Philadelphia this week.

Bryant is a weapon though, in "Monster Park" in San Francisco, along with #83 Arnaz Battle. #83, although he does catch fewer passes maintains a gawdy 19yds per catch!

Our Chief pass defense will have a great matchup. We have been holding back the opposition to 150 yds/passing a game. Completions against us, are averaging only 10.3yds. after two games. That number is the second best average in the AFC. It will be tough, but, we are begining to get a little reputation, a little recognition for our work, regardless if the game is on the road or at home.

This will be another great opportunity to "EnLarGe It".

Go Chiefs. Go Red Warriors!

San Francisco next up!

Using ESPN NFL statistics:

#21 Frank Gore, 5-9, 215 lbs, is the featured running back for the San Francisco 49ers. Gore is also ranked well, #4 in the NFL rankings for his position. Larry Johnson will make it quite a battle a week from Sunday. Larry is ranked lower at #7. Larry will want to make a statement here. It will be a featured battle.

Gore is 23 yrs old, a 2nd year player out of the Miami of Florida. He has also been quite impressive this year as a receiver out of the backfield. He has made 8 catches for an 11.6 yd average. Larry compares favorably, with 10 catches and 12.1 yds. This is a matchup to target in the game at Arrowhead.

Since he has been made a starter this year, he has been a very productive 49er. Gore has gained 214 yards on 45 attempts for a 4.8 yd average. He is built like a little fireplug. His longest run though was for 32 yds against the Arizona Cardinals defense. You know he will meet a stiffer challenge in Kansas City.

Most of this guys yards come in the first half when he carries for up to 15 times. His stats get very respectable, close to 6yds per rush. He falls off as the game goes on. This will be key with our rush defense loaded for bear early in the game.

The 49ers favor running him up the middle and off tackle to the left. This is where he has made most of his big plays this year, they have also come, after being stopped for little or no gain on first down. It is then he has shown he can break one. On second down and with 8-10yds to go he has achieved 52 yds on 5 carries. In the middle of the field he has alot of carries. That implies ball control. It looks to me like we gotta get to him early, dishearten him.

Make them throw the ball. He has the 11 pass receptions out of the backfield in two games. While productive to the right and left, he has broken one left, for 39 yards. Alright, defensive ends strap up your helmets!
Bell will get a good chance to match that bigtime hit in the backfield last week. !!
HiT iT KEndReLL !!

Kudos to Jared Allen for leading the team in tackles! You will see alot of Frank Gore coming around your way. Jared has compiled 13 tackles from the defensive line, a budding powerhouse line that totals 36, they are getting after it.

It is time to turn this around!

Grey Skies are going to Clear !

There already is a small pot of gold-
at this end of the rainbow! 0-2

Week two Chiefs vs. NFL stats:

"Yes, 0-2 is a sad place to be. How many other 0-2 teams can come close to matching these breakdowns statistically?

From: ESPN Week 2 compilations

Kansas City overall defense
is ranked number 05 in the AFC! Number 09 in the National Football League! -
breaking the top ten in week 2! Lets stay there!

Kansas City defending the pass is #6 in the entire NFL, number #5 in the AFC
Kansas City defending the run is #10 in the AFC

This defense is awesome and getting somewhere fast. The Gunther Cunnigham Defensive schemes have bent and yes, been broken but they have had little offensive support. Look at these numbers.
The defense especially against the pass has been stellar. The defensive run numbers are among the top as well. Check the rest of the league.

*********************************************************

Offensively, conservative is the key. However there are some good reasons by the numbers to remain positive,

Kansas City offense
is ranked number 08 in the AFC. Number 20 in the National Football League-
Acceptable considering the missing pieces.

Miami is ranked number 21
Baltimore is ranked number 24
Washington is number 25
Pittsburgh is ranked number 27
Tampa Bay is number 28
Carolina is down at 30

Kansas City is Number 5 rushing in the conference
Cincinati- is the competition at four with about 20 yds separating them.
Larry Johnson is no. 7 in the league!
Tell me you are not surprised by those numbers!

KC- DamonHuard is ranked (ta-da) no.10... passing in the NFL. He quietly, nicely has compiled a rating of 92.5
others include:

(18) SEA- M. Hasslebeck has a rating of 78.9

(30) DEN-J Plummer has a rating of 38.6

(14)Cin-C. Palmer has a rating of 85.3

(11) ATL- M. Vick has a rating of 89.0

Hold your heads up boys... Denver knows how Lucky they are!

Hey good job Defense! Super!

Pass this bloody logo on to the most valuable defensive player of the game.

Hold your heads high. Hell, ya know, the whole team played well. They followed the game plan to the letter. Great job, good concentration, all good focus.

The only gliches, the Johnson fumble in Quarter number one, the brain cramps that befuddled Huard on MAYBE two occasions (actually, yeah, kudos to him too!) We just caught a couple bad breaks. Literally. Thats it, amen, game over.

You all did well, the ferocity on defense was there. I'm proud of you, the new angry Chief attitude was prevelant to all who watched the game. Honestly folks, them Broncos were looking at each other, mouths agape, stood on their heels for just about the entire game. The exception: the final drive... game over.

Take a nice long break all... Hey the best news of the day: That the Chargers, 2-0, (who complied 40pts yesterday) are looking at Baltimore on the road, then follow with Pittsburgh at home. They could be 3-2 coming into Arrowhead week 7!!!

We'll have to see...

The 49ers will be stopped, Arizona too on the road. Then the next big test: the Steelers in Pittsburgh will test the "meddle" of this strong Chiefs Defense.

Interesting season, it is unfolding!

Its time to see a Game Plan in Denver

We need to see a reason to place our trust in this coaching staff. Its not enough to look for
hope week after week. Let it start today. I watched that battle yesterday between Oklahoma and my hometown Oregon Ducks. A nail gripper, a hair puller. Those two clubs went at it for hours, literally. Hard defenses. Amazing offenses. Strike for strike, over and over. Every punch was countered- every knockdown was responded to. That was football!

I need to see the same today from the Chiefs.

No doubt, many in Kansas City do too. Hunger! Ire! Attitude! Just plain old determination, in every run, on every pass play. I want to see that defense Pop! Dont you?

This team has a chance to change the world today. Quiet the nay-sayers! It the stinking Denver Broncos! We got the tools, we need to start to turn the screws.

Okay, Jason, you got it right again:
He wrote in todays paper, that among other things...

"Support means we need to be patient as the Chiefs transition to a different offensive philosophy. Support means we need to recognize the good things that are happening. There’s legitimate evidence that Kansas City’s defense is better. Last week’s loss to the Bengals was not a total train wreck, at least not defensively"
(To reach Jason Whitlock, call (816) 234-4869 or send e-mail to jwhitlock@kcstar.com. For previous columns, go to KansasCity.com)

Well that defense has a reason to shine today!

D'line et al:
Give that 'wiley veteran', Damon Huard, a good chance, a fine chance, at taking them Broncos down today boyz! What do you say!

Attention: Larry-
Let them Broncos come by later... just to scrap all blood off your cleats-! Later... after the game! Its so much sweeter to rip them open on their own turf. You know, It ALWAYS hurts ...alot longer!!!

Bubby Brister to Damon Huard- No time to Chill !!

Damon Huard said in his news conference:
"I haven't played a whole lot in recent years," he added. "To get out there and play the game, sure, it's an opportunity. But the circumstances aren't that great. I'd feel better if I was going in for Trent because he'd rolled his ankle."

Well, in case you too were wondering, Bubby Brister of the Pittsburgh Steelers had some advice for his fellow former backup brother. He too, of course, has had a similar recent resurection, the result of the team number one going down.

"The only advice I would have for him going against the Broncos, who have just come off a loss and are playing at Mile High, is wear a few extra pads and double-buckle your chinstrap." said Bubby Brister, was once the backup to John Elway, remember those days?
Remember, that he went 4-0 as a starter in 1998, the year of the Broncos' last Super Bowl. Hey Damon, be ready. "It's going to be tough." said Brister.

It has been well publicized that Huard hasnt started a game in six years. He is however 5-1 in his career starts so there is a potential win here. You gotta ask yourself though does he have any potential to remain in the starting spot should Trent have sustained a condition with moderate to long term risk of damage? Is he only starting this week because Brodie Croyle needs more time to develop? Is he being used again on an interim basis, between Greens' recovery and Croyles maturity in the Chiefs football system?

Backup quarterbacks usually form in one of two classes. Some college stars are drafted to forever remain backups. Remember Steve Spurrier, Jason Garrett, Terry Hanratty, or Koy Detmer, Gary Kubiak, Babe Laufenberg? These are/were all stars quarterbacks at their alma maters. Honestly though they were drafted as backups from the beginining. Is Damon along with his brother Brock destined to remain forever a backup as well? Will he become a late bloomer, one of a rare breed, to join late the other number one's including recently Vince Cutler and Arizona's Matt Leinart, Tennessee's Vince Young and Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers all who are being groomed to become future number one quarterbacks?

Damon. Come on dude. Sunday, Invesco, Colorado is your stage, it is your best shot with all the starters on your team! Resurect your career... Make it your Milestone at the Mile High City! Go on. Give it your best shot!

Hey, Brock will be wartching too! Go for it!

ATTENTION: #27 Larry Johnson RB

Larry,
In case you need something to fire you up THIS week, here is some of the smack the Denver newspapers are feeding their fans- and the rest of the world.

*************************************************

...It's not that Johnson will fall off the map this season. But 2,000 yards, the figure Edwards has heard so often since replacing Dick Vermeil? He's going to rely on Johnson to help the Chiefs control the ball, but not that much."

"Everybody tells me he's going to run for all these yards," Edwards said. "I told Larry: 'You know what the key for you is right now? You have to help us win games. Here's the first question they're going to ask you after we win a game and you ran for 80 yards. They're going to say, 'What happened, you didn't run for 100 yards?'"

...The Broncos have outscored them 160-91 in five games at Invesco Field, which breaks down to an average score of 32-18. Last season was typical of the Chiefs' lack of success in Denver, where they lost 30-10 after opening the year with back- to-back victories.

..the Broncos allowed 78 yards rushing per game in 2005, second-best in the league at home behind the Chiefs, who allowed 76.1 per game at Arrowhead Stadium.

...Things obviously will change against the Broncos. The results may be similar, but, at the very least, the Chiefs will alter their approach.

...As elusive as Johnson is - including off the field, where he couldn't be tracked down for an interview.

Its not Is Huard ready... The Question Is: Is Plummer ready?

(Denver Post / Steve Dykes)

I'm playing as hard as I can." Jake Plummer, Broncos QB

--UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES--

--TO CHIEFS QB BROCK HUARD--

Please, if the Denver media get this,
If the NBC, NFL broadcasting crew get this,
Please, DO NOT show Jake Plummer the quarterback rankings for Week 1

Have you seen the QB ratings for week 1?

Damon Huard QB- 97.9
Jake Plummer QB, 26.3

I think all the turnovers Sunday in Saint Louis werent all commited by Jake.
Come on.Cut him some slack! It did however remind fans and the media of that really bad AFC Championship Game last year.
They made most of those turnovers during the Champiuonship game AND in last Sundays game, playing from behind. The Chiefs know all about that!

Usually, the Broncos dont have to play catch up, usually they rely on the defense to hold down the opposition until they catch fire. So now we have to wonder which team will show up and play in Invesco Field Sunday afternoon.

Usually, the Chiefs dont have to play catch up, USUALLY they come out and score early and often. It will be nice to now see if the renewed Chief defense can take this opportunity to make a name for itself and batter back the BONCO potential that has laid dormant.

If the Chiefs Dline, et. al. can manage to hold onto any lead that RB Larry Johnson can build, if it can keep them behind- forcing them to pass, if they can keep those two running Bells from clanging, they have a chance.

The Broncos are 2-14 in games when they trailed going into the fourth quarter the past three seasons, with all but three of those games featuring Jake Plummer at quarterback.

Early line Wednesday: Denver by 10.5

Vegas doesnt have much faith in the new and improved Chiefs Defense against the Jake Plummer led/leaderless Offense.
Boy, you had to be impressed with Coach Herm Edwards press conference yesterday. He spanked "loudly" all the doubters and the naysayers didnt he? I think he made some excellent points. He did run a wide open game plan, from the start of the game. It was the turnovers that made the wide open offense ineffective. When you have to try to turn on the tap THAT many times the hadle is bound to come off. The misdirections are trashed, they are no longer effective. They are longer 'bought' by any defense that knows just how long the field is. As long as they remember how many points you need to win- its a LONG, Long, long, game!

It just makes it all way TOO predictable, way TOO fun.

Notice how the sacks mostly happened (how many were there again, I lost count!) after they realized they could play so many 'games' on defense, confuse your frustrated line and start headgaming the quarterback!

I guess a 10.5 pointspread is reasonable.

No if the Chiefs "D" can get as annoyed as their coach on Sunday, things may be different. Bring on Cutler!

Plummer vs. Cutler, is there really a choice in Denver?

I remember back Ohhhh... 4yrs ago, and beyond, when I lived in A-town, in the great State of Oregon. It was back then in the heyday the "Elway era" in Denver. Jake Plummer then was the man I use to root for, to bring the Arizona Cardinals to the playoff dinner table.

Well that was a few dayz back so I thought I'd have to recheck the facts.

After nine years, Elway had thrown for about 27,900 yards, 148 touchdowns and 140 interceptions; Plummer though has thrown for about 27,200 yards, 150 touchdowns and 148 interceptions and played for a bottom feeding offense most of the time, for the first six years of his career. He has played as well as has been expected in Denver since, and hey, it would have been difficult for anyone to match his numbers with the Cardinals. Honestly, do you see any reason that Plummer could not or would not end up with Elway-like career numbers if he stayed in Denver for the next six seasons? Honestly, he could! Alas, I dont think he will.

Plummer is viewed by the media and the fans in Denver as a loose cannon, I believe, most of these want to bench him for Jay Cutler. These painful feelings Jake has been enduring since last Sunday nights loss, are the result of Plummer's self-inflicted wounds. Elway was a master, he caught on how to handle the media during the mid-week info gathering process. He aced all the seemingly endless questions, some dribble at times, mostly obvious at others. He remained charming and personable flashing his blue eyes and always, endlessly, 'playing with that hair'!

Remember that show? We all do!
Plummer though wears his emotions for all to see.

If Jake has had a troubling day, he will let you know to keep clear or, prioritize his time for you- to put it bluntly. If on the other hand he is feeling confident, no problem, he will answer until he feels he has done so significantly. THEN, he will show you his priorities.

He is not shall we say, not yet endearing in his media demeanor, not quite yet. The fans though and others are growing weary as to when he will grow up. I guess we could all have needed some therapy after all those questions in ther Arizona sun! I dont know. At any rate Jay Cutler was drafted to protect the heritage of the Elway era. He is ready to assume that role, ask him, they say. It is 'assumed' he will get his shot in '07- No matter what Jake does in the playoffs or any Super Bowl!.

Personnel executives around the league have been included in this mindset - they just don't think he acts like like a successful starting quarterback should!

Im sure circulating that message will go a LONG way in making him feel more comfortable talking to the media and endear himself to the fanbase.

Its that old question from college psych class, all over again. What is the problem - Nature? vs. Nurture?

AT ANY RATE THERE WILL BE NO JAY CUTLER DEBUT IN DENVER
HUARD YOU GOT A FULL WEEK GET TO WORK!
and lastly
WHO IS THIS GARDNER DUDE, WE MISSED OUT ON A COUPLE GOOD ONES.... for him?

Meanwhile in Philadlephia...
(oh yeah the guys that GOT Dante Stallworth... they won.)

***************************************************************** from ESPN:

"They got things going in the second quarter when Stallworth flew past a seemingly unaware C.C. Brown and caught a 42-yard touchdown pass to tie it at 7. It was the first of several times the Eagles would exploit Houston's inexperienced secondary.-

Stallworth struck again just before halftime when McNabb found him for a 37-yard reception to the 5. Reggie Brown scored on the next play to give the Eagles a 14-10 halftime lead.-

"We had an idea of the caliber of athlete he was," McNabb said of Stallworth. "We just kind of visualized what he could do in this offense. This is just a start. What he was able to display today, we have big-play capability."

Stallworth had four receptions for 124 yards by halftime and finished with a career-high tying six for 141 yards for his 10th career 100-yard game.

"They brought me here to do a job and it feels good to get a win," Stallworth said. "I know I can get better every day, every week and make sure I'm really working with Donovan to make sure we're in sync."

Just... Some MORE Information to fuel the Fire !!!

JASON! Its time for kickoff! Lets hear from you!

ATTENTION: BELOW is some of the nasty smack those B'gals are dishin' for week one- all over our Chiefs!
People in KC should take note!
Then,
People in Kansas City should be pissed!

************************************************************
from: http://bengals.com/team/matchup060910.asp
(please see link provided for the FULL story)

This is a nice Pro Bowl matchup, although the 33-year-old Adams has been limited in preseason and Shields (who turns 35 a few days after the game) missed the last two games with an ankle sprain.

Adams (knee) returned to practice Friday for the first time since he impressed everyone with his Bengals debut Aug. 25.
If healthy, he's the run-stopper the Bengals have coveted for years
and will make an impact
against a run-oriented team like the Chiefs right away.

"I heard all the horror stories about Sam, but I've never seen it," said the guru. "He's not a problem. Sam comes to play. Maybe he's had issues with conditioning, but for 30-35 snaps at that spot, he's still as good as anyone in the league. He still has that quickness off the ball and the ability to wreak havoc.
He is definitely going to help them."

But the proud Chiefs offensive line of the last 10 years is no more
with the retirements of tackles Willie Roaf and John Welbourn,
and the guru says the Bengals should be able to take advantage of
left tackle Kyle Turley (out of the game for two years) and right tackle Kevin Sampson has just one NFL start. Sampson is on the injury report and up next would be Will Svitek, an all-league player in NFL Europe who has yet to play in an NFL game.

"Their offensive line is different. Turley is only 275 pounds and the question is going to be how he holds up against bull rushers," the guru said.
"It's not the same offensive line."

Congratulations JW!!

Yes, Jason Whitlock, KC sportswriter and ESPN contributor hit the mark,
he was 'right on the money today!'

He talks about how Coach Marvin Lewis and the Bengals want desperately to shut the mouths of public opinion about those unending lets call'em...
"legal issues"
that clouded the teams image of itself, as a winner.
Lewis would yes, love to start fast and gain
instant credibity
with the media-
immediately!

Whitlock added,

"We’re going to find out a lot about Kansas City’s defense today.
With a trip to Denver on the schedule next week, today’s contest is as close to a must-win as a season opener can be.

Thankfully, Cincinnati’s defense has far more holes and questions marks
than Kansas City’s. I expect Larry Johnson, Trent Green and Tony Gonzalez to cover for KC’s defense. The Chiefs will win a shootout. I hope."

Shake 'em up Chiefs!

Let me know what you think leave me a comment:

with Coach Lewis... They led the NFL in Turnovers?

JASON D. GEIL/The Cincinatti Post

Yeah, ...they got the stars, in quarterback Carson Palmer and wide receiver Chad Johnson. I swear though, I was not aware that their unheralded defense led the league in turnovers last year. Did You?

Well they have made those subtle changes we talked about in the previous blog post (scroll below) but now, taking all that in, now I have to start to worry about that easy 14 point spread I was so generous with on the Arrowhead Poll this week. Sorry Chris! I want to reconsider.

Okay, I know how we embarrassed them, just this last New Years, yeah, their unheralded "D" remained unheralded THAT day. Heckfire. It didnt even show up! I know it is OUR big red machine home opener. I know all that. We do have a very very improved team... but I got to wonder if those Bengals "D' men want to remain unheralded this week... or this year!

Seriously, this last season produced the franchise's first winning season, division title and playoff appearance in 15 years.

Three year Coach Marvin Lewis has said "When we got started in '03, I don't think people realized the fine line between winning and losing," Lewis said in an interview. "I talked about that and I think people thought I was crazy. They thought there was a bigger difference between the top of the league and the bottom of the league. We showed them very quickly that there is very little difference; it's a small, small difference."

It has been a trying offseason, beginning with the rehab of Palmer, or rather all of the speculation from the outside regarding Palmer's rehab. It is complete; he will start the season opener at Kansas City eight months to the day from his reconstructive surgery.

Lewis' philosophy didn't waver.

"He's always prepared to continue on. He makes his small changes, one job done, but he's not going to rest on it".
"No, he's already plotting, planning, thinking to the next week or the next game or the next season".
"It's good that he's that way because he keeps us all focused on what we need to do so we don't sit there and say, 'Wow, we did something great"- d line coach Jay Hayes.

Marvin Lewis talks openly about his gameday.. "I hate to lose and when you lose it's like someone stuck a knife in you," Lewis states. "It takes a while to get that air back in. But yet, that is the exciting part. That's what it is. You love to see the excitement in our guys' eyes as they go out and take the field. That's fun. You know they're ready to play. His thoughts are said to be the same game after game.

"I just pray every week that I don't screw them up," Lewis says. "That's what I pray for; to make sure that I make good decisions that don't screw us up on Sundays, that I allow those guys to go out and play and win. I pray that the decisions we make allow our good players to go win for us. I think that's what professional football is all about. Your good players have to go win the game for you."
_____________________________________________________
Well, lets all pray in Kansas City- that the tinkering he accomplished in the "unheralded Defense" this off season, (see previous posts) Lets pray those changes dont keep him from feeling that "losing" knife slide into his back... this Sunday!

Chiefs by... oh... letsee... 6pts! -Chiefs 27-21 !! pt total 48!!
Sorry Chris!

I told you they would remember us!

This Sunday is the day and the opponent Carson Palmer focused throughout rehab. September. 10th @ Kansas City.

A sign that Palmer he is one of the NFLs best- is that everyone, even his counterpart, the guys from the other side of the field are is his corner.

One is Trent Green, he has reached out several times to Palmer since the injury, though he didnt even know him. Green had went through ACL surgery himself nine years ago. Green made his first call to him shortly after the Palmer surgery but the two didnt meet up until a golf tournament in July.

Green told him that he was happy for him they talked about the mental part of healing. About being back in the pocket, having guys blitzing in at your feet and guys falling into you. Trent now sees that Palmer is doing a great job with it, he watched the Green Bay game. The young quarterback only took 43 snaps in his two preseason games, but earned a 140.2 passer rating.

Even Chiefs coach Herm Edwards gives him kudos. "I'm happy for him. I'm a former player and you always want good players when they're injured to get through it and be able to play again". Edwards went on. "I just feel like when your star player in this league gets hurt, it hurts you a little bit. It hurts the league and I think he's one of the star quarterbacks in our league and it's good to see him back playing.

Respect is earned.

The Sam n' Rudy Show is Coming to Town!

The Bengals will play the Chiefs in the opener Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium. Bengals' Coach Marvin Lewis said the Chiefs would essentially be the same team under first-year coach Herm Edwards. he insists if the Bengals can provide Rudi Johnson running room Sunday against the Chiefs,-it would go a long way to silencing the crowd at Arrowhead Stadium, the NFL's loudest venue.

The last time the Bengals played the Chiefs was on New Years Day, nine months ago. This Bengals team insist, they went out and tried not to get anyone hurt for their playoff run. In suffering the 37-3 loss, Rudi barely broke his own season rushing record with 18 yards on 10 carries. This same Rudi today says, he wants to make it right,

"We had that date circled on the calendar. It left a bad taste in our mouth. It was what it was, but we didn't play our best football."

Even with the horrible Chiefs game, Rudi played last year with a torn knee cartilage- in all but one game. That you gotta admit is badass. Against Larry's 5.2 yards per carry that won him the AFC rushing title with 1,750, the same Rudi still managed to finish fourth with 1,458. He has followed that effort, responding with what he calls, the best offseason of his life, though after carrying 77 times over the previous two preseasons, Johnson got cut back to 15 this year. No one seems worried. Particularly Rudi.

"We just want to win, baby, Rudi said. The rest will take care of itself.

With a recovering Carson Palmer, coach Marvin Lewis insists he is not going to give Rudi more carries just to protect his young quarterback. We'll have to see.
Two players, two bad knees in the backfield means someone somewhere likely is just going to have to give! Hope it is both.

So! Which Johnson will rush for the big game on Sunday? The Bengals Rudi or the Chiefs Larry.

Larry smacked the Bengals for 201 yards in last seasons regular-season finale. But now, for this Cincinnati defense that was a different era. Only three defensive starters are in the same spot that they were on New Years Day. Strong-side David Pollack is the only linebacker in his same spot, and right corner Tory James is the only defensive back in the same spot against Kansas City quarterback Trent Green. He lit them up on New Years for 344 yards while missing six of his 29 passes. They remember that too.

Right defensive tackle John Thornton is the only line starter in the same spot. Bryan Robinson, didn't play New Years, he is at a new position at left end, moving Justin Smith to the right end position and then the key, *Sam Adams, -now anchors Shaun Smith at left tackle.

Yes, the other big change in Defense "Big Sam Adams". You remember him dont cha? He usta play with New England, for about... oh, a decade!
"Sam is a big wide body that takes up two guys" said Shaun Smith, in with a new tackle rotation. "I like him. He's a big guy that can rush the passer, too". Adding, "We've got more depth. I think we're going to rotate more, so we'll be all right."

What? Say What? Are these guys reading the Chiefs defensive schemes??

So enter Adams and safety Dexter Jackson both newly aquired free agents into this mix, the pair that supposedly fit nicely into this new gameplan. Adams is there to stop the run and Jackson prevent the big play. That team remembers. Larry's touchdowns last year went for 49, 20 and 14 yards.

At any rate it'll all be tested come Sunday.

ATTENTION: Instead of seeing tackle Matthias Askew in the trenches- a "former" Bengal (who played in his ONLY game last New Years Day)- perennial Chiefs All Pro Bowl guard Will Shields will tale on Adams.

All I can say is... Herm wants us to be tested against the best!

A few less Tigers in the Jungle.

Chris Perry can do things with a football in his hands few others on the Bengals can, but the running back won't be able to flash his speed and skills until the middle of October. As part of paring the roster to the NFL's 53-man limit, the Bengals placed Perry and two other players on the Physically Unable to Perform list, meaning they will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

Additionally, suspended superstar Bengal linebacker- Mr. Odell Thurman, still has 4 additional criminal convictions pending. Two of the upcoming charges also involve illegal activities and happen to be substance related. Thurman, began his first four-game suspension after playing in the final preseason game Friday night at Indianapolis. With those other charges, he is expected to incur at least another four gamer with convictions of at least one more. The remaining though will be handled at the discretion of the commisoner of the NFL. Many bengals fans forsee a mandatory one year suspension.

Unfortunately, Coach Marvin cannot count on those and a few other legs to help defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in their season opener at Arrowhead this Sunday. There may be others yet unannounced, but two such important pieces, one from the offense and another from the defense may help to make Larry Johnsons running 'tude and the Chiefs defense feel alot more at ease.

Starting to feel like the Jailblazers East!

The Bengals got their fill of issues over the offseason. With the real thing a week away, one of this team's big questions awaits the following Chris Henry's sentence. Mr. Henry, Cincinnati's third receiver, has been involved four arrests in a seven-month period beginning last November. He faces his first charge in court date later this month in Orlando on a felony gun charge and he still has a DUI case pending against him in Clermont County Florida. This guy too, is troubled for sure, but the consequences will not envelop him in time to keep him off the opening day active roster. Darn!

And Finally,

Chargers linebacker Steve Foley, also a former Bengal, was shot by an off-duty policeman in front of his San Diego home early Sunday in his second run-in with police in 4½ months. Coach Marty Schottenheimer does report the wounds were not life-threatening. Foley's agent, David Levine, told the AP that Foley was shot three times and had surgery for wounds to his leg, arm and chest. All this after refusing to obey the commands of a police officer after a high speed chase.

The Saints went Marching Down... Good "D" Guys!

Actually the Saints made a game of it. Thanks to the failed two point try the Chiefs held on to win! Meanwhile, many of those Kansas City Star writers were decrying the boredom of the game. Many were telling of the disappointments, the failures and the melancholy that apparently nearly overwhelmed them, had them nearly asleep at their laptops.

I saw a different game. The youngsters gave and gave, unending effort, not always showing in yards. Many of the kids knew this would be their last NFL game and left it all on the field! Yes, there was sloppy play, there is supposed to be in game four of the preseason. That did not deter most of them from working hard, from keeping their focus, from overcoming inadequacies to hold on for the win. As Chiefs coach Herm Edwards would say, that was an ugly win. 10-9, hey, It wasnt a loss!

So many people played well, for some it was expected, for others it was better than expected. Brodie Croyle to Jeff Webb, all night, thanks grandma!!! Yeah! Whatabout, Hey, That goal line defense, it should be taped for the training reels! Some other major achievers for the game included K Fox, he made four unassisted tackles! Jimmy Wilkerson made four solos as well, then threw in a sack for good measure. Jarrad Page contributed five more unassisted! They dont keep track of ALL the stats, on the hurries and the broken passes, they dont measure the impact of those hits in mph... or the ability to stop a key drive. All was well at Arrowhead. Some writer/fans are just spoiled. Statistically, Kris Griffin was undoubtably a sparkplug, he got five tackles, four of which were solo, then a key interception to stall an important drive. No one wrote about those efforts, mentioned these guys and their work! Well maybe the interception, one line.

Runningbacks showed themselves well too. Mackenzi Smith put up ALOT of pretty quality reps. Michael Bennett did too yes, but he was followed to by a young kid named Ross from wherever, Long Beach State, is that what I heard? Both were very very fine performances. For the evening, these guys were compling yards and even completing drives at times.
So I watched an entertaining game. It looked like everyone who was out there, had fun out there.
Kudos boys, good luck to you all, go forth and multiply!

(Hey didnt Ryan Sims get a sack one time, or possibly... just monster pressure! Good job Ryan!)
